The 2009 chinook salmon season on the Upper Salmon River has closed. While high water made fishing difficult early on, the latter part of the season provided great fishing. Many anglers harvested salmon and enjoyed the opportunity to fish for these big fish.

Fishing is generally good in waters throughout the region. Trout fishing on the main Salmon River all the way up to the Stanley area has been good recently especially during the morning and evening hours. Anglers report good luck with spinners. Grasshoppers are everywhere right now, so hopper patterns are a good bet if you are fly fishing on the river.

Bayhorse Lake and Mosquito Flats reservoir outside of Challis are fishing very well right now. Nightcrawlers and marshmallows are excellent baits when fishing at about 4 feet in depth. Fly fishermen at Bayhorse report that blue damselfly patterns are the way to go right now. Mackay Reservoir is also fishing well especially at the north end. Anglers report luck with midges, leaches, marshmallows, and worms.

William's Lake outside of Salmon has been reported to be fishing well recently. Trout are apparently hitting on most patterns right now.

Don't forget to check with the tackle shop nearest your fishing destination for bait, tackle, additional fishing tips and information on local fishing waters.
