ADF&G Seeks Comment on Draft Management Plan for Izembek State Game Refuge

(Juneau) - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) seeks public comment on an Izembek State Game Refuge draft management plan. The management plan and subsequent regulations will be used by department staff to authorize appropriate activities in the refuge through Special Area Permitting.

The draft plan presents management goals for the refuge and identifies policies to be used in determining which activities are compatible with the protection of fish and wildlife, their habitats, and public use of the refuge.  The proposed policies address such issues as access and use of resources in the refuge.  The draft plan includes a list of proposed regulations for implementing the plan.  However, proposed regulations may be revised based on any changes to management plan policies.  ADF&G will conduct a separate regulatory review for the Izembek State Game Refuge after the management plan is finalized later this year.

Established in 1972, the state game refuge includes lands and waters within the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, tide and submerged lands in Izembek Lagoon, and marine waters outside of the barrier islands.  The primary purpose of the State Game Refuge is to protect and preserve the natural habitat and game populations, particularly waterfowl.

The draft plan is available for public review and comment through March 17, 2009.  Copies are available on the department website at http://www.wildlife.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=refuge.izembekplan and at ADF&G offices in Anchorage, Douglas, King Salmon and Kodiak.  Additional copies for review will be at the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge office in Cold Bay and at local community libraries.  Written comments may be submitted via email, to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
