Districts Affected: Upper Yukon River
Assessment projects are currently indicating that Tanana River fall chum and coho salmon abundance levels are expected to have a small surplus available above escapement and subsistence needs. Two previous commercial periods in District 6 have landed 991 fall chum and 304 coho salmon. Based on the current abundance and harvest rate, the Department is announcing two additional 42-hour commercial salmon fishing periods for the Tanana River District 6.

In District 6, commercial salmon fishing will be open for two 42-hour periods from 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 25, until 12:00 noon Sunday, September 27, and from 6:00 p.m. Monday, September 28, until 12:00 noon Wednesday, September 30.

Commercial fishermen should confirm their market before they go fishing. At this time, one commercial processor is expected to buy salmon in District 6. All salmon harvested during commercial fishing periods must be recorded on a fish ticket at the time of sale. Salmon harvested and not sold should be recorded on the fish ticket as “not sold”. The commercial fishing periods will be monitored closely and subsequent periods may be announced based on the harvest rate and the abundance of fall chum salmon as the run develops in the Tanana River.

Subsistence and personal use fishermen in District 6 are reminded that permits are required and the total harvest must be recorded on the permit at the time of harvest. Permits are available from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office in Fairbanks.
