Effective 6 p.m. Monday, August 10, subsistence salmon fishing with set gillnets will reopen in all freshwaters of the Nome Subdistrict.   The freshwater subsistence fishing schedule consists of two 48-hour periods per week from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Wednesday and from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Saturday. In freshwater areas, set gillnets may not exceed 50 feet in length and may not obstruct more than one-half of any stream or stream channel or braid. The subsistence fishing schedule will remain in effect until September 1. After September 1, subsistence fishing with set gillnets in freshwater is open 7 days a week.
Reopening freshwater areas of the Nome Subdistrict provides additional opportunity for subsistence fishers to harvest silver salmon. Thus far, silver salmon escapements to Nome Subdistrict drainages have been below average for early August. The department will closely monitor escapements over the next week to determine if restrictions will be necessary to reach escapement needs.
